5th Sunday after Pentecost / The Holy Fathers of the First Six Ecumenical Councils

/ St. Vladimir Beatitudes on 12, Octoechos: 4; Fathers: 4, from Ode 3; Saint: 4, from Ode 6.

1. By the tree was Adam forced to depart from paradise; but by the Tree of the Cross was the thief made to dwell in paradise.  For the one by tasting, broke the commandment of the creator; while the other, crucified with Him, confessed the hidden God, crying out: Remember me in Thy kingdom!

2. O Lord Who wast lifted up upon the Cross, Who hast destroyed the power of death and as God hast destroyed the record of our sins, grant also the repentance of the thief unto us who faithfully serve Thee and cry out to thee, O Christ God Who alone lovest mankind: Remember us also in Thy kingdom!

3. On the Cross Thou didst tear asunder with the spear the record of our sins; and, numbered among the dead, Thou didst bind the tyrant of hades, O Lord Who lovest mankind, Who by Thy resurrection hast delivered all from the bonds of hades.  Thereby have we been illumined, and we cry to Thee: Remember us also in Thy kingdom!

4. O Thou Who alone art immortal, Who wast crucified and as almighty didst arise from the tomb on the third day, and hast raised up Adam, the first created: Vouchsafe that I also may turn to repentance with my whole heart, and may ever cry out to Thee with fervent faith: Remember me, O Savior, in Thy kingdom!

5 & 6. The mindless Arius, showing himself to be a servant of a created being, and Macedonius, likewise revealed as abominable, are tormented together in the fire of Gehenna with the heathen.

7.  With the seven sacred councils of the holy fathers didst thou adorn the honored Church, O Christ, driving far away the darkness of deception as with the light of seven beacons.

8.  The multifarious murrain of the heretics destroyeth Thy flock, O Word; but the shepherds of Thy noetic sheep have cured this by their doctrine.

9.  By the power of God have Satan, the destroyer of souls, and his false sacrifices been trampled underfoot; for unto us hath Christ shown the faithful Prince Vladimir to be a model of one who doth crush and dash him down beneath our feet.

10.  Of old the Lord saved Israel from slavery by the hand of Moses; and now He hath likewise saved us all from the falsehood of idolatry by the hand of Vladimir, the faithful prince.

11.  As is meet, we all call upon thee, crying aloud: Rejoice, O most honored and all-blessed one!  For we have thee as our deliverer with God, O Vladimir.  Disdain not thy servants, but ever preserve us.

12. O all-pure and all hymned Virgin, through thee we have found salvation.  Our God, Whom the angels in heaven desire to see, hath now become a visible infant in thy womb.

Troparia

Tone 4:  Having learned the joyful proclamation of the Resurrection from the angel, /
and having cast off the ancestral condemnation, /
the women disciples of the Lord spake to the apostles exultantly: /
Death is despoiled and Christ God is risen, //
granting to the world great mercy.

Tone 8:  Most glorified art Thou, O Christ our God, /

Who hast established our holy fathers as luminous stars upon the earth, /

and through them didst guide us all to the true Faith.  //

O Most merciful One, glory be to Thee.

Glory… Tone 4:  Thou wast like a merchant that seeketh a beautiful pearl, /

O glorious sovereign Vladimir, /

sitting on the height of the throne of the mother of cities, God-protected Kiev. /

Searching and sending to the imperial city to know the Orthodox Faith, /

thou didst find Christ, the priceless Pearl, /

Who chose thee as a second Paul, /

and Who did shake off thy spiritual and physical blindness in the holy font.  /

Wherefore, we who are thy people celebrate thy falling asleep. /

Pray that thy Russian land be saved, /

and that Orthodox people //

be granted peace and great mercy.

Both now… Tone 4: The mystery hidden from before the ages /
and unknown even to the angels, /
through thee, O Theotokos, hath been revealed to those on earth: /
God incarnate in unconfused union, /
Who willingly accepted the Cross for our sake /
and thereby raising up the first-formed man, //
hath saved our souls from death.

Kontakia

Tone 4:  My Savior and Redeemer hath, as God, /
raised up the earthborn from the grave and from their fetters, /
and He hath broken the gates of hades, /
and, as Master, //
hath risen on the third day.

Glory… Tone 8:  Like the great Apostle Paul, O most glorious Vladimir, /

in old age thou didst leave off all zeal for idols as a childish sophism, /

and as a full-grown man thou wast adorned with the royal purple of divine baptism. /

And now as thou standest in joy in the presence of Christ the Savior, /

pray that thy Russian land be saved, //

and that Orthodox people be granted peace and great mercy.

Both now... Tone 6: O protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, /

O mediation unto the Creator unfailing, /

disdain not the suppliant voices of sinners, /

but be thou quick, O good one, to help us who in faith cry unto thee; /

hasten to intercession and speed thou to make supplication, //

thou who dost ever protect, O Theotokos, them that honor thee.
