10th Sunday after Pentecost / Martyr Andrew Stratelates and those with him / Afterfeast of the Dormition

Beatitudes on 10: Octoechos: 6; Feast: 4, from Ode 5.

1. Through food did the enemy lead Adam forth from paradise; but by the Cross hath Christ led back to it the thief who cried: Remember me when Thou comest in Thy kingdom!

2. With Adam and the thief I worship Thy sufferings and glorify Thy resurrection; and I cry out with a splendid voice: Remember me, O Lord, when Thou comest in Thy kingdom!

3. O Sinless One, of Thine own will Thou wast crucified and placed in the Tomb, yet Thou didst arise as God, raising up with Thyself Adam who crieth out: Remember me when Thou comest in Thy kingdom!

4. Raising up the temple of Thy body by Thy resurrection on the third day, O Christ God, Thou didst raise up Adam and his descendants who cry: Remember me when Thou comest in Thy kingdom!

5. Very early, the myrrh-bearing women arrived, weeping, at Thy tomb, O Christ God; and they found an angel sitting there, clad in white garments, who said: What seek ye? Christ is risen! Lament no longer!

6. When Thine apostles went to the mountain whither Thou hadst commanded them to go, and saw Thee, O Savior, they worshipped Thee; and Thou didst send them unto the nations, to teach and baptize them.

7. The choir of the apostles assembled, borne as on a cloud to Zion from the ends of the earth, to serve thee, the light cloud through whom God Most High, the Sun of righteousness, hath shone forth upon those who are in darkness and shadow.

8. More melodious than clarions, the God-pleasing tongues of the theologizing men sounded forth to the Theotokos, playing a funeral hymn inspired by the Spirit: Rejoice, O incorrupt fountain of God’s life-creating incarnation which saveth all!

9. Let the clarions of the theologians trumpet forth today, and let the eloquent tongues of men now render praise; let the air resound, shining with boundless light, and let the angels hymn the dormition of the all-pure Virgin.

10. It was fitting for thee, O most lauded Virgin Theotokos, to be the chosen vessel, which is wholly marveled at in hymnody at thy departure, wholly consecrated to God, divinely pleasing unto all, and truly shown to be such.

Troparia & Kontakia

Tone 1: When the stone had been sealed by the Jews, /

And the soldiers were guarding Thine immaculate Body, /

Thou didst arise on the third day, O Savior, /

granting life unto the world. /

Wherefore, the Hosts of the Heavens cried out to Thee, O Life-giver: /

Glory to Thy Resurrection, O Christ. /

Glory to Thy kingdom. //

Glory to Thy dispensation, O only Lover of mankind.

Tone 1: In giving birth thou didst preserve thy virginity; /

in thy dormition thou didst not forsake the world, O Theotokos. /

Thou wast translated unto life, /

since thou art the Mother of Life; //

and by thine intercessions dost thou deliver our souls from death.

[Troparion of the Temple]

Tone 5: Leaving the glory of earthly rank behind, /

thou didst inherit the kingdom of heaven; /

and with tears of blood as with all-wondrous stones /

thou didst adorn crowns of incorruption, /

and didst lead to Christ an assembly of athletes. /

With the choirs of the angels thou didst find Christ, the never-setting Sun, /

in light unwaning, O holy general Andrew. /

With those who suffered with thee ever entreat Him, //

that He save our souls.

Tone 1: As God, Thou didst arise from the tomb in glory, /

and Thou didst raise the world together with Thyself. /

And mortal nature praiseth Thee as God, /

and death hath vanished. /

And Adam danceth, O Master, /

and Eve, now freed from fetters, rejoiceth as she crieth out: /

Thou art He, O Christ, //

that grantest unto all resurrection.

[Kontakion of the Temple]

Glory… Tone 2: Standing before the Lord in prayer, /

like a star preceding the sun, /

thou didst gain sight of the desired treasure of the kingdom, /

full of ineffable joy; /

and for ages without end, O general Andrew, /

thou dost unceasingly sing to the immortal King with the angels. //

With them pray thou continually for us all.

Both now... Tone 2:

The grave and death could not hold the Theotokos, /

who is sleepless in her intercessions and an unfailing hope in her mediations. /

For as the Mother of Life she was translated unto life //

by Him Who dwelt in her ever-virgin womb.

Instead of “It is truly meet…” we chant the Irmos of the 9th Ode of the First Canon of the feast, First Tone:

Refrain: The angels, having beheld the Dormition of the Most pure One, /

were struck with wonder, //

at how the Virgin went up from earth to heaven.

Irmos:  In thee, O Virgin without spot, /

the bounds of nature are overcome: /

for childbirth remains virgin /

and death is betrothed to life. /

O Theotokos, Virgin after bearing child and alive after death, //

do thou ever save thine inheritance.

Communion Verse: Praise the Lord from the heavens, praise Him in the highest! Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous; praise is meet for the upright. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!
